Br. Kevin Griffith, CFC, province leader of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers North America, was elected president-elect of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men during the National Assembly, held online Aug. 4-5, 2020. He will join the board of directors of CMSM immediately and, in August 2021, succeed Rev. Adam Gregory Gonzales, OCD, as president.

Rt. Rev. James Herring, O.Praem, prior of the Norbertine Fathers of Delaware, was elected to fill the at-large board position that opened up when board member, Rev. Frank Donio, SAC, was appointed interim executive director.

Major superiors also overwhelmingly approved updated Standards for Accreditation, the national safeguarding standards for Catholic male religious institutes, monasteries, and abbeys.

The keynote speakers at this year’s Assembly were New Orleans Auxiliary Bishop Fernand Cheri, III, OFM, and Sulpician Father Thomas Ulshafer. The theme was “Repentance and Reconciliation.”

On August 6, 50 religious men from 27 different provinces and monasteries signed up for CMSM’s first “Conversation for Young Religious.” Newark Auxiliary Bishop Elias Lorenzo, OSB, the immediate past president of the American-Cassinese Congregation of Benedictine Monasteries, spoke about hope in this time of pandemic and change before the men, who were within five years of final vows or ordination, broke into small groups for discussion.
